Chicago is a city with a rich and vibrant theater scene. From the early days of the Goodman Theatre to the present day, Chicago has been home to some of the most innovative and groundbreaking theater in the world.

Ensemble: An Oral History of Chicago Theater tells the story of this remarkable city's theater scene through the voices of the people who have made it happen. From actors and directors to playwrights and designers, Ensemble offers a firsthand account of the challenges and triumphs of creating theater in Chicago.

The book is divided into four parts, each of which focuses on a different era of Chicago theater. Part One, "The Early Years," covers the period from the late 19th century to the early 20th century. Part Two, "The Golden Age," covers the period from the 1920s to the 1950s. Part Three, "The New Wave," covers the period from the 1960s to the 1980s. And Part Four, "The Present Day," covers the period from the 1990s to the present.

Ensemble features interviews with more than 100 people who have played a role in Chicago theater. These include such luminaries as Steppenwolf Theatre Company founder Terry Kinney, Goodman Theatre artistic director Robert Falls, and Second City co-founder Bernie Sahlins.

Ensemble: An Oral History of Chicago Theater is a must-read for anyone who loves theater or who is interested in the history of Chicago. It is a fascinating and inspiring account of a city that has been a major force in the development of American theater.
