Altdorfer was born in Regensburg, Germany, in around 1480. He trained as a goldsmith, and he initially worked as a designer of jewelry and other decorative objects. In the early 1500s, Altdorfer began to paint, and he quickly became one of the leading artists in Regensburg. He was a member of the Danube School, a group of artists who were known for their innovative and naturalistic approach to painting.
Altdorfer's early paintings were primarily religious scenes, but he soon began to focus on landscape painting. His landscapes are characterized by their detailed and realistic depiction of nature. Altdorfer often included small figures in his landscapes, but the focus of his work was always on the natural world. He was fascinated by the beauty of the Bavarian Alps, and he often painted scenes of mountains, forests, and rivers.
Altdorfer's landscapes were groundbreaking at the time. Before the 16th century, landscape painting was not considered to be a legitimate genre of art. Landscapes were typically used as backgrounds for religious or historical scenes, but Altdorfer was one of the first artists to paint landscapes for their own sake. His landscapes were praised for their beauty and their technical skill, and they helped to establish landscape painting as a legitimate genre of art.
Altdorfer was also a talented printmaker. He produced a number of woodcuts and engravings, many of which were landscapes. His prints were widely circulated, and they helped to spread his influence beyond Regensburg. Altdorfer was also an architect, and he designed a number of buildings in Regensburg, including the Old Town Hall and the St. Ulrich's Church.
Altdorfer died in Regensburg in 1538. He was one of the most important artists of the German Renaissance, and his work had a profound influence on the development of landscape painting. His landscapes are still admired today for their beauty and their technical skill, and they continue to inspire artists around the world.
