Marion Robert Morrison, better known by his stage name John Wayne, was born on May 26, 1907, in Winterset, Iowa. His father, Clyde Leonard Morrison, was a pharmacist, and his mother, Mary Alberta Brown, was a homemaker. Wayne was a talented athlete in high school, playing football and track. He also had a passion for horses and riding, which would later become a defining characteristic of his on-screen persona.
After graduating from high school, Wayne attended the University of Southern California on a football scholarship. However, he left USC after two years to pursue his acting career.
Wayne's first acting role was in the 1926 film Brown of Harvard. He continued to appear in small roles in films throughout the 1920s and early 1930s.
In 1930, Wayne's career took a major turn when he was cast in the lead role in the Western film The Big Trail. The film was a critical and commercial success, and it made Wayne a star.
Wayne continued to star in Westerns throughout the 1930s and 1940s. He became known for his rugged good looks, his strong moral character, and his ability to play the role of the cowboy with authenticity.
During World War II, Wayne served in the United States Navy. He was awarded the Bronze Star for his service.
After the war, Wayne resumed his acting career. He starred in a number of classic Westerns, including The Searchers (1956),Rio Bravo (1959),and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962).
Wayne continued to act until his death from cancer in 1979. He is considered one of the greatest actors in American history, and his films continue to be enjoyed by audiences around the world.
