Vowell's writing is both personal and insightful, as she reflects on her own experiences growing up in the American West and traveling the country as an adult. She weaves together history, culture, and nature, creating a rich and nuanced portrait of the American landscape.
Vowell is a gifted storyteller, and her descriptions of the people and places she encounters are both vivid and moving. She has a keen eye for detail, and her writing is full of humor and insight. The Square to Square Swing is a must-read for anyone who loves the American landscape.
Excerpt from The Square to Square Swing
I was born in Bozeman, Montana, a town of about 30,000 people nestled in the Rocky Mountains. My parents were both teachers, and we lived in a modest house on the edge of town. I spent my childhood exploring the mountains and rivers around Bozeman, and I developed a deep love for the American landscape.
When I was 18 years old, I left Montana to attend college in the East. I spent the next four years living in New York City, and I was exposed to a whole new world of culture and ideas. But I never forgot my roots, and I always longed to return to the West.
After college, I moved back to Montana and began working as a journalist. I spent the next several years traveling the country, writing about the people and places that I encountered. My travels took me from the Appalachian Mountains to the Pacific Ocean, and from the Gulf of Mexico to the Arctic Circle.
Through my travels, I came to appreciate the diversity and beauty of the American landscape. I also came to understand the challenges that the country faces, from environmental degradation to economic inequality. But despite these challenges, I believe that the American landscape is a source of hope and inspiration.
In The Square to Square Swing, I share my experiences traveling the country and exploring the American landscape. I hope that my book will inspire readers to appreciate the beauty and diversity of the country, and to work together to protect it for future generations.
