Terry Fox was born in Winnipeg, Canada, on July 28, 1958. From a young age, he was an avid athlete, excelling in basketball, soccer, and track and field. However, his dreams of becoming a world-class runner were shattered when he was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a type of bone cancer, at the age of 18.

Faced with the prospect of losing his leg, Terry made a courageous decision: he would have his leg amputated above the knee and continue running.
