Surely We Can Do More: Unlocking the Potential of Every Student
In a world where every child deserves a quality education, there is no excuse for allowing even one student to fall behind. Yet, in the United States, millions of students are not reaching their full potential. The achievement gap persists, and too many students are being left behind. But it doesn't have to be this way.

In Surely We Can Do More, education expert David Steiner argues that we can and must do more to ensure that every student has the opportunity to succeed. Steiner draws on his experience as a teacher, principal, and superintendent to provide a roadmap for educational reform. He shares innovative approaches and real-world success stories that prove that we can close the achievement gap and create a more equitable education system.
The Problem
The achievement gap is a serious problem that has plagued the United States for decades. In 2019, the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) found that:
- White students outperformed Black students by an average of 25 points in reading and 28 points in math.
- White students outperformed Hispanic students by an average of 18 points in reading and 20 points in math.
- Students from low-income families outperformed students from high-income families by an average of 17 points in reading and 19 points in math.
These disparities are unacceptable. They represent a failure of our education system and a betrayal of our children. We cannot afford to continue to allow these gaps to persist.
The Solution
So what can we do to close the achievement gap and create a more equitable education system? Steiner believes that the key is to focus on three essential elements:
- High expectations: We must set high expectations for all students, regardless of their race, ethnicity, or socioeconomic status. We must believe that all students can learn and achieve at high levels.
- Effective teaching: We must ensure that all students have access to effective teaching. This means providing teachers with the training and support they need to be successful.
- Supportive learning environments: We must create supportive learning environments where all students feel safe, respected, and challenged.
Steiner provides a wealth of practical advice on how to implement these three essential elements in schools. He shares examples of innovative programs and initiatives that are making a difference in the lives of students. He also provides guidance for parents and community members who want to get involved in the fight for educational equity.
Surely We Can Do More is a powerful call to action for all who believe that every child deserves a quality education. Steiner provides a roadmap for educational reform that is based on evidence and real-world success stories. This book is an essential read for anyone who cares about the future of our children and our country.
