Newburn by Chip Zdarsky: A Gritty and Unflinching Look at Police Brutality
In the small town of Newburn, the police force is a law unto themselves. They terrorize the citizens, brutalize the innocent, and protect their own no matter what. But when a new police chief arrives, he vows to clean up the department and bring justice to the town.
Newburn is a powerful and unflinching graphic novel that examines the issue of police brutality through the lens of a small-town police force. Writer Chip Zdarsky does not shy away from the harsh realities of police violence, and he paints a vivid and disturbing picture of the ways in which law enforcement can abuse its power.
The story follows the new police chief, Malcolm, as he tries to reform the department and bring justice to the town. But Malcolm soon realizes that the problems in Newburn run deeper than he could have ever imagined. The police force is corrupt to the core, and the citizens are terrified of them. Malcolm must find a way to break the cycle of violence and corruption, but he quickly learns that it will not be easy.
Newburn is a gripping and suspenseful thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat from beginning to end. But it is also a deeply moving and thought-provoking story about the human cost of police brutality. Zdarsky does not offer any easy answers, but he forces us to confront the harsh realities of police violence and the need for reform.
If you are interested in social justice issues or if you are simply looking for a great graphic novel, then I highly recommend Newburn. It is a powerful and important story that will stay with you long after you finish reading it.
