King was born in Atlanta, Georgia, on January 15, 1929. He was the son of a Baptist minister and a schoolteacher. King attended Morehouse College and Crozer Theological Seminary, and he was ordained as a Baptist minister in 1954. In 1955, King led the Montgomery Bus Boycott, a year-long protest against the segregation of public buses in Montgomery, Alabama. The boycott was successful, and it helped to spark the civil rights movement.

King went on to become one of the most prominent leaders of the civil rights movement. He led protests and marches, and he spoke out against segregation, discrimination, and violence. King's speeches were powerful and inspiring, and they helped to change the hearts and minds of many Americans. In 1963, King delivered his famous "I Have a Dream" speech at the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. The speech was a call for equality and justice, and it helped to inspire the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

King was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee, on April 4, 1968. He was 39 years old. King's death was a tragedy, but his legacy continues to live on. Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a day to celebrate King's life and work, and to recommit ourselves to the fight for equality and justice.
