King was born in Atlanta, Georgia, on January 15, 1929. He was the son of a Baptist minister and a schoolteacher. King attended Morehouse College and Crozer Theological Seminary, and he was ordained as a Baptist minister in 1954. In 1955, King led the Montgomery Bus Boycott, a year-long protest against the segregation of public buses in Montgomery, Alabama.
