Early Life

Babe Ruth was born George Herman Ruth Jr. on February 6, 1895, in Baltimore, Maryland. He was the child of George Herman Ruth Sr. and Kate Schamberger Ruth. Ruth's father was a saloon keeper, and his mother worked in a factory. Ruth had two older sisters, Mary and Mamie.

Ruth was a sickly child, and he was often in and out of the hospital. He had scarlet fever, diphtheria, and measles. Ruth's health problems led to him being held back a year in school.

Ruth began playing baseball at a young age. He played on sandlot teams and in local leagues. Ruth was a natural hitter, and he quickly became one of the best players in his area.

Professional Career

In 1914, Ruth signed a contract with the Baltimore Orioles. He made his major league debut on April 11, 1914, and he quickly became one of the best players in the league. Ruth led the league in home runs in 1919, and he helped the Red Sox win the World Series.

In 1920, Ruth was traded to the New York Yankees. He quickly became one of the most popular players in the league, and he helped the Yankees win seven World Series titles. Ruth was a powerful hitter, and he holds the record for the most home runs in a single season (60).

Ruth retired from baseball in 1935. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1936.

Personal Life

Ruth was married twice. He married Helen Woodford in 1914, and they had two children. Ruth and Woodford divorced in 1929. Ruth then married Claire Hodgson in 1930, and they had one child.

Ruth was a heavy smoker and drinker, and he had a reputation for being a womanizer. He also had a gambling problem. Ruth's personal problems led to him being suspended from baseball several times.

Ruth died of throat cancer on August 16, 1948. He was 53 years old.

Legacy

Babe Ruth is considered one of the greatest baseball players of all time. He holds many baseball records, and he helped the New York Yankees win seven World Series titles. Ruth was a powerful hitter, and he was one of the most popular players in the league.

Ruth's legacy continues to this day. He is still remembered as one of the greatest baseball players of all time, and his name is synonymous with the sport.
